On June 20th the Southern hemisphere experienced its shortest day. This occurrence sometimes called the Winter Solstice was celebrated by the AVWA at the Federation Square. The project titled “The Light in Winter” is an annual winter festival and celebration of community life for Melbourne centred on light. It brings together artists, designers and communities to explore their ideas of light, enlightenment and hope.
As part of AVWA’s contribution we organised a small installation of lanterns and candles as part of a smaller sub project called “Gift of Light”. Our installation one of thirteen made by varying community groups aimed to explore the cultural significance of light in a Vietnamese context.
Overall the day was fun and exciting with lots of music, dance and most importantly light. We had great pleasure in setting up our installation and would like to thank those who came to support our organisation, including Bac Tuong who also visited on the night.
