AVWA Celebrates 15th Anniversary of the Brighter Futures Program with Record Participation

Richmond, VIC – October 18, 2024

The Australian Vietnamese Women's Association (AVWA) proudly marked the 15th anniversary of its Brighter Futures Program with a vibrant year-end celebration on Tuesday, October 15th at 22 Lennox Street, Richmond. The event highlighted the program's continued success with record participation and enhanced support for students in 2024.

Brighter Futures offers tailored tutoring to children from vulnerable families in Richmond, helping boost their confidence and academic performance. Held every Tuesday during school terms, the program engages volunteer tutors from Melbourne Girls' College, St Kevin's College, Mac.Robertson Girls' High School, and Simonds Catholic College. These high school students gain valuable teaching skills while making a positive impact on their younger peers.

"For 15 years, AVWA has proudly served our community through the Brighter Futures Program, demonstrating our commitment to education and empowerment," said Nicky Chung, CEO of AVWA. "Phuong Vy, the student mentors, the teachers, and the volunteers should be incredibly proud of their efforts. They are helping to provide the students with a strong foundation, opening up so many future possibilities."

Since its establishment, Brighter Futures has received support from the City of Yarra. Recently, funding through the North Richmond Precinct Community Grants Program has enabled AVWA to continue delivering these vital services to the Richmond community.

The celebration brought together key figures to commemorate this milestone and another successful year. Attendees included AVWA's CEO Nicky Chung; Tran-Dang Thanh-Kham, Vice President of AVWA; AVWA's senior leadership team; Christopher Newland, North Richmond Precinct Manager from the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH); representatives from the Salvation Army; high school teachers; and students.

Looking ahead, AVWA aspires to broaden the Brighter Futures Program to the West and South East of Victoria, extending the program's benefits to even more vulnerable children and communities.

We welcome inquiries from those interested in becoming volunteers, partnering schools, or co-funders.
