FOGO campaign: A member of AVWA showcasing how they use their FOGO bin

🌱 Did you know that on average, over 667,000 tonnes of scraps are collected from household food and garden organics bins in Victoria each year? That’s enough to fill the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) twice!

The food scraps and garden clippings in the food and garden organics bin get transformed into valuable compost, which can be used on farms to grow better quality food and reduces the waste that goes into landfill!

Our head office and Springvale office councils have introduced food and garden organics bins, and by 2030, every household in Victoria will have access to a food and garden organics bin or special drop-off points.

Let’s put food scraps and garden clippings in the food and garden organics bin and leave contaminations such as plastic packing, fruit stickers, and other non-organic rubbish out.

Worried about smells or pests? Here are some handy tips:

  • Layer garden clippings between food scraps to reduce smell 🍃
  • Keep your FOGO bin in a shady spot 🌞🚫
  • Make sure the bin lid closes completely ✅

If you already compost at home, you can use the food and garden organics bin for things like eggshells, citrus peels, meat, and bones.

Together we can reduce the amount of organic waste going to landfill and turn food scraps and garden clippings into valuable resources like compost, which can be used on farms to grow food and feed us all. 🍎🌾
