Writing Competition in Victoria, Celebrating White Ribbon Day
The Australian Vietnamese Women's Association (AVWA) is excited to announce the “Creating Safe Spaces” poetry, short story, and literary essay contest. This competition aims to inspire and encourage men to explore their creativity through writing.
Contest Details:
- Eligibility: Participants aged 16 and over, residing in Victoria.
- Categories:
- Poetry
- Short Story
- Literary Memoir (including memoirs, essays, travelogues, diaries, and more)
Content Guidelines:
Participants are free to choose their topic. We encourage submissions that explore themes related to family, culture, and traditions of both Vietnam and Australia.
- Languages: Submissions can be in either Vietnamese or English.
- Originality: Entries must be original and unpublished in any form, including print, digital media, websites, and social media. They must not be printed in books or newspapers before the contest ends.
Genre Guidelines:
- Poetry: Multiple submissions are allowed, with each poem limited to a maximum of 50 lines. Long poems, Tang Dynasty poems, satirical or adapted works, and translations will not be accepted.
- Short Story: Maximum length is 1,000 words. Novels and translations are not eligible.
- Literary Memoir: Maximum length is 1,000 words. Entries may include memoirs, essays, travelogues, reports, diaries, etc., reflecting the author’s thoughts and experiences.

- Submission Period: 24th September 2024 – 15th November 2024

Submission Requirements:
At the end of each manuscript, please include the following personal details: full name, address, phone number, and email address.
Prizes:
Winners will be awarded in two age groups:
- 16-40 years old
- 41 years old and above
Each group will have the following prizes:
- 1st Prize - $500 gift card
- 2nd Prize - $200 gift card
- 3rd Prize - $100 gift card
- Two Encouragement Prizes - $50 gift card
Winning entries could be published in the AVWA’s Magazine, Facebook page, or featured on AVWA’s website.
Award Ceremony:
- From 10 AM Friday, 29th November 2024, White Ribbon Day event, St Albans Community Centre
